Is Data the New Gas?
It’s an attempt to “follow the carbon itself,” by tracing and collaging its various footprints within histories of ideas, technology, and popular culture, in an effort to grasp the evasive substance of natural gas through the no-less-evasive field of the social imagination—informed by the Cold War and the current geopolitical attempts at its reenactment
The top-down collapse of Soviet Communism was, among other things, the result of a successful attempt by the party apparatus to privatize the enormous profits derived from the extractivist economic model in its transition to capitalism. The message delivered by the Western elites to their Soviet counterparts—“abandon communism for your personal profit!”—was conveyed through the medium of natural gas

The Shape of Rome
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve gone into a random pizzeria and found a Renaissance fresco, or a medieval beam, or Roman marble. I’ve gone into a cafe restroom and discovered the back wall was curved because this was built on the foundations of Pompey’s theater (where Caesar was assassinated).
TL;DR: Below the level of the present Basilica of San Clemente you can visit the remains of the Basilica from the 4th century.
And below the Basilica from the 4th century you can see the remains of Roman buildings from the times of the empire and the mithraeum from the 3rd century! Truly amazing piece of preserved history.
When Graphs Are a Matter of Life and Death
With the axes set up in this way, the trains appeared on the graph as simple diagonal lines, sweeping from left to right as they travelled across distance and time. In the simplest sections of the rail network, with no junctions or crossings or stops, you could choose where to place the diagonal line of each train to insure that there was sufficient spacing around it.
The problem of planning train journeys in time and space was solved using a graph - it was enough then for the lines representing the train not to cross.
Ingenious! Contrary to appearances, infographics and graphs are a modern invention.
